Cactalien

I have a deep fondness for this character. It first took shape on a cool summer night in the Arizona desert, during a quiet moment of awe. My husband and I were returning from our 10-year anniversary trip, exhausted after a long day on the road. We had booked an Airbnb on a ranch at the outskirts of Tucson, and as night fell, we stepped outside to take in the vast field of stars glittering against the pitch-black sky. That’s when we noticed them: the Saguaros. Towering above even the electrical posts, they stood like silent giants, their presence almost otherworldly.

“What if they were aliens? What if this was their earthly form, standing still by day but moving under the cover of darkness? What if they had lived for thousands of years, watching civilizations rise and fall, knowing us better than we know ourselves?”

The what-ifs came rushing in, weaving stories that I couldn’t let go of. The idea took hold, refusing to fade until I brought it to life. And then, more ideas followed, until this being was no longer just a passing thought—it had become a dear companion, one that still lingers in my mind, always waiting to return.
